On July 19, 2018, FDNY responded to a massive steam pipe explosion in the Flatiron District of New York City. The explosion, which occurred under 5th Ave, spewed billows of steam into the air, crumbled pavement, and disrupted utility services. Forty-nine buildings were evacuated while several others were locked down to shelter in place. Due to the fear of asbestos and other contaminants, FDNY rapidly deployed one of its ZUMRO Model 216 Decon Shelters on site and was encouraging anybody who had exposer to the steam or debris to immediately decontaminate themselves.
